In recent years, the health risks associated with per- & polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have become a significant concern. PFAS chemicals, often used in the production of glass fiber filtration materials, are known carcinogens that pose multiple health risks. In response to these concerns, five EU Member States submitted a restriction proposal to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) under the REACH Regulation on January 13, 2023. This proposal aims to ban the manufacture, placing on the market, and use of PFAS in non-essential applications, including air filtration media.
At TGfilters, we are committed to providing safe and effective air filtration solutions. We are proud to announce that the synthetic nonwoven materials used in our products are PFAS-free.
Health Risks of PFAS
PFAS chemicals are incredibly persistent in the environment and human body, leading to their nickname as “forever chemicals.” They have been linked to severe health issues, including:
- Liver damage
- Increased cholesterol levels
- Weakened immune system
- Reproductive and developmental issues
- Increased risk of certain cancers (prostate, kidney, and testicular)
- Reduced vaccine efficacy
- Hormonal disruption
These substances can accumulate in the environment and in human bodies, with studies detecting PFAS even in the blood of individuals. Their presence in everyday products, including textiles, food packaging, and firefighting foams, makes complete avoidance challenging. However, choosing PFAS-free products can significantly reduce exposure and associated health risks.
Regulatory Changes and Compliance
The restriction proposal by ECHA marks a pivotal step towards eliminating PFAS from non-essential applications. The six-month consultation period ended in September 2023, and ECHA is currently conducting a scientific evaluation of the proposal. Following the evaluation, the European Commission and EU Member States will decide on the potential restriction.
Staying ahead of these regulatory changes is crucial for manufacturers and consumers alike. By transitioning to PFAS-free products now, businesses can ensure compliance with future regulations and protect the health of their customers and the environment.
Our Commitment to Safety
Our air filters, produced from synthetic non-woven materials, are completely PFAS-free. We offer a wide range of filters, from G4-F9 classes according to EN 779:2012, and ISO Coarse, ePM 10, ePM2.5, ePM1, all certified by our suppliers as PFAS-free. Unlike many competitors who continue to use glass fiber-based materials containing PFAS, our filters provide a safer alternative without compromising on performance.
Why Choose Our PFAS-Free Filters?
- Healthier Indoor Air: Free from PFAS, our filters do not release harmful chemicals into the air, ensuring safer indoor environments.
- Regulatory Compliance: Our products are compliant with current and anticipated future regulations, helping businesses avoid potential legal and financial repercussions.
